The Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District (NWAEDD) Board of Directors voted Wednesday to award grants to 23 entities across the district including three local organizations. According to the Harrison Daily Times, the total of the grant money was nearly $176,000.

Arkansas State University-Mountain Home was awarded a $5,000 grant from the board. The university will use the money to help buy equipment at its Home Technical Center.

A grant of $2,500 was handed to Serenity, Inc. Serenity will use the funds toward the construction of a privacy fence at its facility allowing residents a safer area for children and pets.

The Ozark Arts Council was awarded a grant of $6,250. The council has plans for repairs and upgrades at the Lyric Theater in Harrison with specific emphasis on repairing water damage to the floors and walls and updating electrical needs in the lobby.

The money comes from the General Improvement Fund (GIF) grant program through the Arkansas State Legislature. According to NWAEDD Deputy Director Jeremy Ragland, the grants will leave over $558,000 in the organization’s GIF program, but it wasn’t clear if the legislature would approve more money in the future.
