The city of Mountain Home is hosting a free children’s fishing derby in celebration of the opening of McCabe Park Saturday morning at 8. The park is located on the west side of town on U. S. Highway 62 near the Sheid-Hopper Bypass.

Bake Lake, the five acre spring fed lake in the 42 acre park, is being stocked with more than 250 catfish by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in anticipation of the event. In addition to fishing, those in attendance can enjoy free food and beverages. Children will also have a chance to win prizes, including tackle boxes, fishing poles, backpacks and more.

Work on the park is still in progress, according to Mountain Home Mayor Joe Dillard, but progress is being made he says.

The city street department has made the park accessible by building gravel roads. Street Director Amon Tilley says the plan is to pave the roads in the upcoming year. Plans are also in the works to build a walking path to connect to Arkansas State University Mountain Home.

After the grand opening on September 24, the lake will be open to the public to fish free of charge.

Mayor Dillard said the city is looking for donations to name the sports complex and several other areas of the park. He says the cost to finish the complex is about $1 million dollars. The Mayor went on to say, the sooner funds are made available through generous donations, the sooner McCabe Park will be completed.
