JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) A former Joplin police officer has pleaded guilty to a federal charge for offering to help a woman get charges against her dropped in hopes of developing a relationship her with.

Brian Rogers pleaded guilty this week in federal court in Springfield to violating the woman’s civil rights, a misdemeanor.

Joplin police said in a statement Friday that the department learned in December that Rogers sought a relationship with a woman he had cited in October with driving while intoxicated. Police asked the FBI to conduct a criminal probe. Rogers resigned in January.

The Joplin Globe reports that court records show Rogers told the FBI he hoped helping the woman get her case dismissed would lead to a “friendship and then a sexual relationship.”

     No sentencing has been set.
