(AP) – Three former guards at the Louisiana State Penitentiary
at Angola have been indicted for beating a handcuffed and shackled inmate and
conspiring to cover it up.
According to Wednesday’s indictment, former Maj. Daniel Davis, of Loranger;
John Sanders and James Savoy, both former captains and both of Marksville, beat
an inmate then created a false story to hide the alleged misconduct.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release to corroborate their stories
the men instructed subordinates to clean the inmate’s blood before investigators
could document it, falsified reports, ordered subordinates to lie to
investigators and they lied under oath in a civil proceeding arising from the
incident.
A fourth former officer, Capt. Scotty Kennedy, of Beebe, Arkansas, pleaded
guilty Tuesday for his role in the incident.
