Shopping locally important to local small businesses



     After the Thanksgiving meal is finished, folks across the country head to stores and malls to begin their Christmas shopping. Black Friday and Cyber Monday may dominate the headlines, but it is Small Saturday that highlights the importance of shopping locally and supporting small businesses in communities like Mountain Home.

     Scott Copeland, Chairperson of the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce says small business are the lifeblood of a community.

     Small business are one of the largest employers in the United States and national statistics estimate that each dollar spent locally will circulate a minimum of six times before leaving the community.

     Carol Wood, co-owner of Giftiques in Flippin says like all small business owners, they depend on holiday shopping weekends like this to carry them through the year. She says shoppers don’t have to travel far for unique merchandise at bargain prices.

     Duren says shoppers can stay local and shop on-line at their website,shopshabby2chic.com with in store pick up available.

     Records show shoppers spent $16 billion at locally owned stores and restaurants on Small Business Saturday, according to the National Federation of Independent Business, which was a 14 percent increase the previous year.
