The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says it’s identified 28 new cases of chronic wasting disease in deer harvested during the opening weekend of modern gun season.

The commission conducted voluntary sampling at 25 locations in northern Arkansas for chronic wasting disease, which is a neurological disease that primarily affects deer, elk and moose. The commission says samples collected during the weekend of Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 confirmed the disease in deer in Carroll, Marion, Newton, Pope, Searcy and Yell counties.

The commission says Marion and Yell counties were the only new counties to have confirmed case of the disease. The agency says hunters voluntarily submitted 535 samples during opening weekend, and that biologists tested an additional 411 samples from roadkill and deer that had been sick.
