The majority of the new sally port at the Baxter Circuit Court Complex was completed Thursday.

In July members of the Baxter County Quorum Court approved spending $15,000 in grant money received by the county to construct and equip the sally port at the court complex building on 6th Street in downtown Mountain Home. The upgrade is to provide a more secure venue for loading and unloading inmates coming to the complex to make court appearances.

Still left to complete is an entry gate to close the area up. It’s possible a teller fence will be added where the existing chain link fence is located. Once a prisoner transport vehicle pulls into the sally port, the entry gate will close allowing inmates to be loaded and unloaded in a confined, secure space which will also be out of the weather.

The sally port consists of a 31X24 foot structure containing about 750 square feet, according to County Judge Mickey Pendergrass.

The money to fund the project came from the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Security and Emergency Preparedness. The county will also contribute between 8 and 10,000 dollars. The county’s contribution will come from bond retirement funds.
