Bull Shoals-White River State Park kicks off the new year with a “First Day Hike” on the morning of January 1st at 10. Hikers will meet at the Big Bluff Trailhead on Powerhouse Road just beneath the dam. The hike will last about two hours and hikers will hike the Big Bluff Trail, which is 1.75 miles and moderately strenuous. Hikers are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring water. All dogs must be on a leash. After the hike there will be a bonfire with Dutch oven cinnamon rolls.

The first part of the trail is a level walk over the remains of the railroad tram constructed to bring steel and lumber to construct the Bull Shoals Dam. The trail also goes up the hillside to an area overlooking the White River, Bull Shoals Dam, and an eagles nest on the river. It leads through mature deciduous forest and across streams. Hikers can enjoy views and vistas, as well.

This event is free to the public, but due to rugged terrain the trail is not handicap accessible.
