Viola man fleeing police knocked unconscious after hitting tree

     A Viola man, who was fleeing Mountain Home police after a traffic stop, was knocked unconscious when he ran into a tree. Mountain Home Police Office Carry Manuel says 30 year old Christopher D. Mackey was was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, and misdemeanor charges of fleeing, driving while under the influence of drugs, driving left of center, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of an instrument of crime and refusal to submit to arrest. He was released from the Baxter County jail after posting $5,000 bond.

     According to the Chief Manuel, Mackey was driving north on State Highway 5 when he was observed crossing the center line several times. During the stop, officers observed Mackey as being nervous and possibly under the influence of drugs. Mackey gave officers permission to search him and his vehicle and when a substance suspected to be meth was found, he fled police, ran through brush and collided with a tree which knocked him unconscious.

     An ambulance transported Mackey to Baxter Regional Medical Center for treatment where he voluntarily submitted to a drug test. After being released from the hospital, he was transported to the Baxter County jail.
