SEATTLE (AP) _ The Seattle Mariners have swapped outfielders and starting
pitchers in separate deals with the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals.
The M’s have picked up right-hander Yovani Gallardo (yoh-VAH’-nee gy-AHR’-doh)
and cash from the Birds for outfielder Seth Smith. Gallardo was just 6-8 with a
5.32 ERA in 23 starts for the Orioles last season after winning 13 games and
compiling a 3.42 earned run average for Texas in 2015. Smith had 16 home runs
and a career-high 63 RBIs as a Mariner in 2016.
Seattle also acquired speedy outfielder Jarrod Dyson from the Royals for
right-hander Nathan Karns. The 29-year-old Karns was 6-2 with a 5.15 ERA in 15
starts and 22 appearances last season, missing the final two months with a lower
back strain. Dyson batted .278 with 30 stolen bases while platooning for Kansas
City in 2015.
