The City of Gassville has recently been awarded $400,000 in funds from the State of Arkansas to begin a major street project to widen a half mile of South School Street, according to Gassville Major Jeff Braim. He says Gassville is the first city in the state to be awarded the $400,000 maximum amount for a design project by the State Aide City Street Committee.

Braim says it is anticipated the entire project will cost over $750,000 for curbs, gutters and overlaying the existing street material. He says the city will be responsible for the costs over the $400,000 awarded from the state.

There are 38 properties along the half mile of stretch of School Street who will be affected by the project, according to Braim.

The mayor says if the property owners are unwilling to give the city the necessary easement, they could claim eminent domain, although he really hopes that isn’t necessary.

Braim says this is an important project for the city and he hopes homeowners are willing to cooperate with the city.

Braim says the easements need to be obtained by April in order for the project bids process in June. If all goes well, the project will begin later in 2017, but he is unsure how long the project will take.
