JUPITER, Fla. A home run by Balbino Fuenmayor broke a sixth-inning tie, but Todd Cunningham's run-scoring single for St. Louis reknotted the score and the Braves and Cardinals were forced to settle on a 2-2 finish after 10 innings at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday.
Fuenmayor, who served as Atlanta's designated hitter in the game, connected on a Kevin Siegrist fastball for his first home run of the spring. The blast put the Braves back in front, a knock that lasted until the bottom of the ninth. Akeel Morris issued a one-out walk to Paul DeJong, then botched a pickoff that allowed DeJong to advance to third. DeJong then came home on Cunningham's line drive to right.
Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz finished four innings in his third spring start. Cardinals designated hitter Matt Adams took him deep in the fourth, though that was one of though that was one of just two hits surrendered by Foltynewicz on the afternoon. He struck out three.
Cardinals starter John Gant breezed through three perfect innings against his former club. He struck out three and threw 22 of his 31 pitches for strikes in what was his longest appearance yet this spring.
The Braves tallied both of their runs off relievers expected to pitch in the back of the Cardinals' bullpen this season. Before Siegrist served up a homer, Jonathan Broxton allowed a run-scoring single to Tyler Flowers.
Braves third baseman Adonis Garcia exited the game in the second inning due to a left hamstring strain.
Adam Wainwright will take the mound for his third Grapefruit League start on Sunday when the Cardinals serve as the road team in a 12:05 p.m. CT game against the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium. Luke Weaver, who has been sidelined since March 1 because of back tightness, is scheduled to pitch in relief in the game. Coverage begins at 11:45 on KTLO-AM 1240.
