The Baxter County Library Board decided to cease operations of its Gassville location in nearly three weeks. During Thursday’s meeting, the board agreed the branch’s last day of business will by May 12th.

The volume of visitors and circulation at the Gassville branch, staffed primarily by volunteers, has declined since the opening of the Donald W. Reynolds Library building six-and-a-half years ago. The board had already closed the branch on Mondays in August of last year, and since that time, they have been in communication with Gassville Mayor Jeff Braim and the rest of the city council about its status.

Over the last several months, a study of the Gassville branch’s usage was conducted. The main findings determined it averages six patrons per day, it’s detached from the central area of Gassville and in close proximity to the main location equipped with more resources, and its volunteer-staffed model conflicts with security and volunteer best practices

The branch building is owned by the city of Gassville and will be used for city government purposes after its permanent closure.
