Derek Hawes, who lists an address in Center Ridge, entered a guilty plea to breaking or entering and theft of property charges in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday and was sentenced to five years probation, 30 days in the county jail and ordered to pay almost $300 in restitution.

The 27-year-old Hawes was charged with entering vehicles and stealing property while the vehicles were parked at the Mountain Home Walmart in mid-December last year.

Surveillance video obtained from Walmart security captured images of Hawes and a female companion entering the vehicles and removing items from them. Hawes and the companion were located at an apartment complex in Mountain Home. A debit card belonging to one of the victims was recovered.

Hawes also has an open case in which he is charged with entering a vehicle parked at a fast food restaurant in Mountain Home on February 2nd. The victim said he was inside the restaurant when he saw a male in his vehicle. He ran out of the restaurant and pursued the male suspect on foot until he jumped into the back seat of a Chevy Trailblazer and it sped off. The victim, who reported that his jacket, cell phone and some tools were taken from the vehicle, was able to get a license number on the Trailblazer and to provide a description of the suspect.

The investigation led to Hawes, and he was arrested and charged in that incident.
