The path to fill a vacancy on the Baxter County Quorum Court has changed. The vacancy was created when former Justice of the Peace Erric Totty moved from District 3, which he has represented since January.

At the June meeting of the quorum court, Judge Mickey Pendergrass read Totty’s letter of resignation and advised the court a letter requesting an appointment to fill the vacancy had been submitted to Governor Hutchinson, along with a recommendation for the position. By law, the governor is charged with filling the vacancy.

Since then, Judge Pendergrass says he has learned the process for filling the vacancy has changed.

Judge Pendergrass says his office has received a number of calls from District 3 residents expressing interest in the vacancy. But he says it’s unknown whether the callers have visited the Governor’s Website and completed the necessary paperwork to the considered.

The individual appointed is barred from seeking to continue in that role in the 2018 election.
