A Tecumseh man, 33-year-old Brandon Patterson, remains in the Ozark County Jail on a $20,000 cash-only bond charged with allegedly torturing a dog over two days.

According to the arrest affidavit, an Ozark County deputy was dispatched to a residence on Highway PP in Tecumseh in response to a report that a man was actively abusing a dog.

Upon arrival, the officer says he found Patterson on the back porch of the residence. Both Patterson and the porch were wet. The officer says he observed a dog crate sticking out of a metal trashcan and a small dog inside the crate. The dog was also wet and on its side at the bottom of the crate struggling to breathe. As the dog struggled to breathe, it groaned and gasped for air but did not move. Patterson told the officer he had been mean to the dog, and he was sorry.

After being read his rights, Patterson said he put the dog in the trashcan and filled it with water from a garden hose. He filled the can to the handles, which is about three-quarters full. He then forced the dog to swim in the can until it could not swim anymore, at which point he would dump the water and let the dog out. He allegedly told the officer he would repeat the process for an hour or two.

While the dog was in the can, he would use his hand to poke the dog, dunk it under the water, and make it continue to swim. The dog bit Patterson on the hand leading him to use a blow gun to keep the dog swimming and put it under the water. He also placed the lid on the trashcan and placed a cinder block on top, causing the dog to be in complete darkness, with only a small space of air between the top of the water and the lid.

In the affidavit, Patterson reportedly says he didn’t know why he didn’t stop. During a later interview, Patterson says he didn’t know what he was doing putting the dog crate in the trashcan.

A consent search of the residence, shop building, and vehicle was performed. During the search, individually bagged marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia were discovered. Marijuana processing, packaging, condensing, and measuring equipment were also located.

The dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic. The officer reported when he followed up, the dog had improved and was scheduled to be released.

Patterson has been charged with animal abuse, possession with intent to distribute controlled substance, marijuana, and attempt to manufacture a controlled substance.
