Mick Hangland-Skill/KtelFans of The Romantics will “like” this: the band is back with new music and live shows to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The New Wave-era Detroit rockers, best known for the hits “What I Like About You” and “Talking in Your Sleep,” have two new singles and a series of festival and package tour appearances lined up. The new recordings are both cover tunes: the Bobby Fuller Four’s “I Fought the Law” — also famously covered by The Clash — and Joe South’s “Hush,” later a hit for Deep Purple.
The Romantics, who issued a new original song called “Coming Back Home” in 2015, are also working on a full album of original material.
Formed in the Motor City in 1976, the Romantics made their live debut in their hometown on Valentine’s Day 1977. Their 1980 self-titled debut album included the classic “What I Like About You.” Their 1984 single, “Talking in Your Sleep,” made it all the way to number three in the U.S. Both songs were accompanied by videos that got plenty of play on MTV.
The current version of the Romantics includes three of the four original members: singer/guitarist Wally Palmer, lead guitarist/vocalist Mike Skill and bassist/vocalist Rich Cole, who rejoined in 2010. Current drummer Brad Elvis has been with the group since 2004.
The Romantics’ next live show will be Saturday in Fort Wayne, Indiana as part of the Rock of the 80’s tour with the Smithereens, the Motels and Bow Wow Wow.
