The annual school board filing period opened Wednesday in preparation for the election set for September 19. The filing period closes at noon on Tuesday.

This year marks the final time for the school board elections to be held in September. Legislation passed earlier this year by the Arkansas General Assembly calls for the election date to shift in 2018. School districts may choose to hold their board elections on either the May Primary or the November General Election dates, according to Baxter County and Circuit Clerk Canda Reese.

For those interested in running for a school board position, packets, including petitions, are available from the county clerk’s office. Candidates must secure 20 signatures from registered voters in the school district in which they are running. The completed petitions should then be returned to the county clerk’s office.

There are two positions open on the Mountain Home School Board, both are four-year terms. The seats are currently held by Lisa House and Ben Strider.

At Cotter, one five-year seat, currently held by Jimmy Morgan, will be on the election ballot.

At Norfork, one five-year seat, currently held by John Casey, will be on the election ballot.

In Marion County, Flippin Superintendent Kelvin Hudson says one seat on the five-member board will be on the ballot. That five-year term is currently held by Roger Leonard.

At Yellville-Summit, Superintendent Wes Henderson says one seat will be on the ballot. That five-year term is now held by Eleanor Davenport.

The third school district in Marion County, Bruno-Pyatt, is one of the three schools comprising the consolidated Ozark Mountain School District. Zone 7 on the Ozark Mountain School District Board is comprised primarily of the former Bruno-Pyatt district. Randy Brumley was appointed to the remaining three years of a five-year term in March. That seat will be on the September school election ballot, along with two zone seats from the Western Grove area.

For clarification on the boundaries of the zones, a spokesperson for the Ozark Mountain School District recommends checking with the Searcy County clerk’s office.

In Fulton County, Viola Superintendent John May says Andy McKinley holds the one five-year seat on that district’s board that will be on the September ballot.

At Salem, Superintendent Wayne Guiltner says the one five-year seat on the ballot for his school board is currently held by Karen Coffman.

Runoffs, if needed, are held three weeks after the election.

The deadline to register to vote for the school elections is Monday, August 21.
