Credit: Amy GranthamGraham Nash kicked off a new U.S. solo tour last week in support of his 2016 album, This Path Tonight. The folk-rock legend tells ABC Radio that these smaller-scale solo concerts have given him the chance to connect more directly with fans than he did playing shows with Crosby, Stills and Nash.
“I’ve been playing these intimate theaters and it’s really a joy,” Nash declares, “because I can see [the audience], I can look in their eyes and know if I’m communicating, whether I’m reaching them, whether I’m doing my job.”
According to the 75-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, that job “is to give people value for money and to thank them for spending their time,” as well as “to have them smiling as they leave.”
Graham also notes that at his solo performances, he’s able to dig deeper into his expansive catalog of songs, which includes tunes from his solo albums, plus CSN, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, his early group The Hollies and Crosby & Nash.
“I’ve got so many songs, you know, and I have the luxury of changing them night after night,” he tells ABC Radio. “I mean, obviously, people want to hear ‘Our House’ [and] ‘Teach Your Children’…but I want to play ‘Military Madness’ and ‘Immigration Man’ and ‘Chicago’ and love songs that I haven’t gotten a chance to sing.”
Accompanying Graham at his concerts is one-time CSN touring guitarist Shane Fontayne, who also was his main collaborator and producer on This Path Tonight. Nash says he may soon turn his attention to putting together a new solo album: he reveals that he has about seven songs left over from the This Path Tonight sessions that he really likes.
