Motown RecordsA new movie called Detroit, directed by Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow and centering around the riots that took place in the Motor City over the course of five summer days in 1967, will hit theaters on August 4. Of course, the film’s soundtrack is being released by Motown Records.
The soundtrack, which will be released this month, features a number of classic soul songs, including Martha & the Vandellas‘ “Jimmy Mack” and the memorable Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell duet “Your Precious Love.”
The album also features gems by such other veteran R&B artists as The Dramatics, The Devotions, The Elgins, Brenda Holloway and Jerry Williams. In addition, the soundtrack includes a tune by legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and an original new song by The Roots called “It Ain’t Fair” which features guest vocals by Bilal.
“We’re honored and excited to work on such an important and special project as Detroit,” says Motown Records president Ethiopia Habtemariam. “The music from this soundtrack highlights the ‘Classic Motown Sound’ which is a beautiful accompaniment to the story of tumultuous times in 1967 as well as the struggles we face within society today.”
Detroit, starring John Boyega of Star Wars: The Force Awakens fame, will have its premiere Tuesday, July 25, at the Fox Theatre in the Motor City before opening August 4 in theaters across the U.S.
