Norfork will have new mayor, alderman

In addition to having a new mayor on August 1, Norfork will have a new alderman as a result of action taken Tuesday evening.

Phillip Stultz will fill the position one, ward two seat that will be vacant with the appointment of Lisa Harrison to fill the mayor’s role.

The changes came as a result of Mayor Jim Reeves indicating his desire to step down due to health reasons.

The motion to accept his resignation received unanimous approval with just four of the six aldermen present. Members Don Sappington and Eric Stover were absent.

Referring to the Handbook for Arkansas Municipal Official for filling a vacancy in the mayor’s office, the council moved to appoint Alderman Harrison to fill the position. Recorder/Treasurer Christi Dobson serving as acting mayor cast the fourth vote necessary to approve Harrison as the city’s new mayor.

Harrison then voiced her resignation from the council, leading to Dobson again casting the fourth necessary vote.

With the vacancy, Stultz was approved as the council’s new member.

A spokesperson for Norfork City Hall says Stultz frequently attends council meetings and workshops and had expressed his interest in serving at the July 11 workshop.

100 attend Make a Difference Benefit Ride

Approximately 100 motorcycle enthusiasts were on deck for Saturday’s Make a Difference Benefit Ride with proceeds to go to the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas. According to event coordinator Candy Barnes, $2,903 was raised with the funds to be earmarked for the Back Pack program for disadvantaged school children in Baxter County schools.

The Back Pack program provides food to children who don’t have enough to eat over the weekends. Kids who live in households where food is not a priority get most of their nutritional needs met by the school breakfast and lunch programs.

The final event for the fundraiser is Monday. Chilis, located at 2785 U.S. Highway 62 in Mountain Home, will offer a ten percent donation to the program by mentioning the Make a Difference backpack ride when tabs are received.

Bridges back to school bazaar coming soon

It’s less than a month to the new school year begins in Mountain Home, bringing needs from students of all ages as they prepare to enter the classroom. To address student needs, Bridges of Mountain Home will host its second back to school bazaar Friday afternoon, August 4th from 4 until 7 in the bus lane behind Nelson-Wilks-Herron Elementary School.

Students of all ages in the Mountain Home Public Schools will have an opportunity to receive all of their school supplies for free.

Bridges facilitator Jill Czanstkowski, a recent guest on KTLO’s Talk of the Town with host Kim Szecsi, says the goal of the effort is to remove the barriers students need to begin classes.

In addition, Czanstkowski says free school supplies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, although last year the needs of all 350 students were met.

She says a grant from the Twin Lakes Future Fund-Arkansas Community Foundation was the kick start for the bazaar. However, additional vendors and sponsors are still welcome.
