Jerry Brown of Mountain Home pled guilty to charges stemming from a set of circumstances that began with him being reported slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle as it rolled backward on 8th Street with the motor running and was sentenced to three years in prison during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday.

The incident happened in late June.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case, a bystander began knocking on the vehicle’s windows in an effort to wake the 48-year-old Brown and also called 9-1-1 to report what was happening.

Brown did wake up long enough to drive into an apartment complex along 8th Street where he appeared to pass out once more.

The bystander followed him to the location, and when he got Brown’s attention, Brown brandished what appeared to be a black handgun at the person.

When police became involved, Brown fled in the vehicle with officers chasing him at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Brown drove along State Highway 201 until he crossed into Missouri. The pursuit ended on Highway 160 in Missouri when Brown’s vehicle ran out of gas. He was reported to have bolted from the vehicle and fled into the woods on foot. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Officers reported finding a Crossman BB gun against a curb at the corner of Bryant and 9th Street matching the description of the one brandished by Brown when the bystander woke him.

At the time of the incident, Brown was on probation after pleading guilty to charges in two drug-related cases in August last year. A revocation action in that case was dismissed by the state.

A Baxter County Sheriff’s Office patrol car was damaged during the chase. In addition to his prison time, Brown was ordered to pay slightly more than $2,500 in restitution to cover those damages.
