A group of unwanted visitors have returned to the Twin Lakes Area. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service has already received reports of fall armyworms appearing on lawns in Baxter, Marion, Izard and Boone Counties.

Baxter County Extension Agent Mark Keaton says his office received its first report nearly two weeks ago, and other surrounding counties had reports of armyworms in bermudagrass pastures, hayfields and bermudagrass since then. Keaton adds now is the time to be scouting for armyworms.

Armyworms can vary in color from light tan or green to nearly black with stripes down their sides. The Extension Service reports their heads are dark with a prominent light-cream colored inverted “Y” on the front of their heads.

Keaton says they’re a continuous resident of the gulf states and tropics, but they often migrate north.
