The Arkansas Activities Association’s governing body, made up of school administrators from around the state, gathered Monday for their annual meeting at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, and a number of proposals were considered with the majority passing. The most notable proposal barely passed with a vote of 141-68, and it eliminates Class 7A beginning in the fall of 2018 for every sport except football.

This proposal had been introduced in the past by former Mountain Home athletic director Janet Wood, and current athletic director Mitch Huskey agrees it’s the best situation for the school district.

Under the new rule, football classifications and conferences will remain the same. For other sports, the 16 biggest high schools will make up Class 6A, Class 5A will have the next largest 32 high schools, and 48 schools will occupy Class 4A. The remaining schools will be divided evenly among Classes 3A, 2A and 1A.

Huskey says he expects Mountain Home’s conference in the following school year will go one of two ways.

The only proposal out of the nine considered by the governing body that didn’t pass was another classification proposal. Huskey says every proposal that was approved may affect Mountain Home in some way, but he was in favor of the majority of the proposals put forward.

Most of the proposals will go into effect immediately. The proposals on classification and the tennis season will begin in the fall of 2018.
