(AP) – An Arkansas panel has denied proposals for
open-enrollment charter schools in the central and northeast parts of the state. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the Charter Authorizing Panel voted 6-0 to deny a charter for Aviate Through Knowledge Inc. and 5-1 to deny a charter to the Weiner Academy of Agriculture and Technology.

Administrators for both schools are allowed to appeal the decisions to the state Board of Education, which has the authority to vote to accept the panel’s decision or to conduct a hearing.

Superintendents of nearby school districts opposed the proposals for the schools that would’ve been located in Little Rock and Weiner. Others, including Republican Rep. Mary Bentley of Perryville and Republican Rep. Dwight Tosh of Jonesboro supported the charters.
