Christopher Mackey of Viola, who had the misfortune of starting the new year off by running into a tree and knocking himself out while fleeing on foot from Mountain Home police January 1, was given six years probation on charges stemming from the incident during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday.

The 31-year old Mackey entered a guilty plea earlier this month, but was required to complete DWI screening before being sentenced.

According to court records, a Mountain Home police officer stopped a vehicle being driven by Mackey after the officer observed it crossing the centerline of the highway several times.

During the stop, Mackey was found to have a small plastic bag believed to contain methamphetamine. As Mackey was being taken into custody, he attempted to flee into nearby woods, but during the pursuit, he ran into a tree and knocked himself out.

In addition to probation, Mackey will be required to complete a driver’s safety course and will have to spend 10 days in the Baxter County Jail.
