A special presentation will be featured at this week’s meeting of the Baxter County Historical and Geneological Society. Attendees will hear the presentation titled “Why the Trail of Tears Came Through Here” by Freda Cruse Hardison Tuesday evening at 6:00 in the Knox Room of the Donald W. Reynolds Library.

Hardison shares based on her detailed historical research and interviews the background of family connections between Cherokee Americans and early white settlers in the Ozarks and connections leading to the Benge Route of the Trail of Tears which came through Baxter and other neighboring counties. The focus of the presentation is on Wagonmaster John Ruddell Benge, his relationships with people in the Ozarks and the reason his was the only route to go through the local area.

The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call 870-425-2551, go online to baxtercountyhistory.org, or visit Baxter County Historical & Geneological Society, Inc., on Facebook.
