Randy Adams of Mountain Home pled guilty to amended charges stemming from his attempt to intervene in an altercation between his son and Baxter County Sheriff’s Deputies in late December last year and was sentenced to five years probation during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday.

Adams was charged with terroristic threatening and obstructing governmental operations.

Events leading to the eventual arrest of the 52-year-old Adams and his 32-year-old son, Gearl, began when deputies were called to a business along Buzzard Roost Cutoff after a report was made that two customers had become belligerent, created a disturbance and even threatened to shoot employees.

There was a black semi-automatic pistol laying in the driver’s seat of the vehicle that the father and son duo had driven to the business, according to court records.

Randy and Gearl Adams had gone to the business to have a cellphone repaired, became dissatisfied with the speed of the service they were given and began to curse and make threats. According to the probable cause affidavits filed in the cases, both men had been drinking.

According to a press release from Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, Sergeant Brian Davis responded to the business and saw Gearl Adams began to walk away from him. He was ordered to stop but refused to comply. When Davis reached for Gearl Adams’ arm in order to detain him, he began fighting with the officer.

Davis attempted to deploy his Taser but one of the probes didn’t attach, rendering the device ineffective. Gearl Adams then attempted to tackle Sergeant Davis. Other deputies arrived on the scene and eventually took Gearl Adams into custody.

Sergeant Davis sustained injuries to his forehead, nose and face during the scuffle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

During the altercation, Randy Adams attempted to interfere with the deputies trying to take his son into custody. He was reported to have screamed and cursed at the deputies and had to be restrained. He was also arrested and taken to the Baxter County Detention Center.

Gearl Adams was given six years probation in May.

Adams was sentenced under provisions of Act 346 meaning that if he stays out of trouble during his probation period, he can petition the court to have his record sealed.
