It’s Homecoming week for Mountain Home High School, and since 2010, activities have concluded with the MHHS Athletic Hall of Honor. One of the new inductees to be honored Saturday is the 1997 Bomber baseball team who finished the season as state champions.

The season started on a rough note for Mountain Home as they lost their first five games, but Ron Czanstkowski, who served as the team’s head coach, says it wasn’t indicative of the talent his team had.

The 1997 Bombers finished the regular season as co-runners-up of the AAAA-Central Conference with Conway and J.A. Fair. Mountain Home began the Class AAAA State Tournament with a victory over Benton. Two extra-inning games followed as they topped Rogers in the quarterfinals and Pine Bluff in the semifinals, and a 6-5 victory over Sheridan capped off the season to take home the championship trophy for what was then the largest classification in Arkansas.

Czanstkowski says one of the factors in making 1997 a special season was the support players had not only from fellow teammates, but also fromt he community.
