Jamie Squire/Getty Images(HOUSTON) — A five hour, 17 minute affair gave baseball one of the most exciting games of the postseason yet. Game 5 of the World Series began on Sunday night and spilled into Monday morning, and saw the Astros win in dramatic fashion 13-12 over the Los Angeles Dodgers to take a 3-2 series lead.
The talk heading into the game was the potential pitchers duel between Astros’ ace Dallas Keuchel and Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw. That storyline was erased fairly quickly, as Keuchel was chased after just 3.2 innings, giving up four runs that put his team in a 4-0 hole early.
Kershaw also began to unravel in the fourth inning, giving up four runs to tie the score at four all. A Cody Bellinger home run in the fifth put L.A. back in front 7-4, but Kershaw put two men on in the bottom of the inning and was taken out for Kenta Maeda, who served up a three run home run to the Astros’ Jose Altuve, tying the game once again.
Bellinger delivered a big hit once again for L.A. in the seventh, an RBI triple to put his team ahead 8-7, but the Astros responded with four of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a three run lead.
Each team scored a run in the eighth, making it 12-9 Dodgers, but the Astros bullpen couldn’t close the door in the ninth. Yasiel Puig’s two-run home run and Chris Taylor’s RBI single tied the game at 12 and sent Game 5 to extra innings.
In the end Alex Bregman was the hero for Houston with an RBI single in the bottom of the tenth, sealing the victory for the hometown team.
The game set many records, as it was the highest scoring extra-innings game in World Series history and the first with three three-run home runs. It also marks the first time in the World Series that four different players age 23 or younger hit a home run. Bellinger joins Bregman, L.A.’s Corey Seager and Houston’s Carlos Correa, who all hit homers in previous games.
The Astros can clinch the first World Series in team history on Tuesday in Game 6 in L.A.
