SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) A Missouri State Highway Patrol sergeant is blaming a fax machine mix-up for the loss of a gunshot residue test that could have helped prove the innocence of a man convicted of killing his wife a decade ago on Christmas Day.
The Springfield News-Leader reports that Sgt. Dan Nash testified Thursday during the third day of a hearing in which Bradley Jennings’ attorneys are trying to win him a new trial or freedom. At issue is the test conducted on the robe that Jennings was wearing in 2006 when 39-year-old Lisa Jennings died at the couple’s home in Buffalo, about 35 miles northeast of Springfield.
The defense contends she killed herself and that the negative result would have helped his case. He’s eight years into a 25-year sentence.
