#GivingTuesday’s 6th year begins Tuesday

#GivingTuesday kicks off Tuesday, following the Thanksgiving holiday and the popular Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The global social media event benefits local charities and nonprofits. According to the Arkansas Nonprofit Alliance, #GivingTuesday was developed to give back to organizations who provide services to communities throughout the year.

Many organizations across the Twin Lakes Area are set to participate this year.Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson released a proclamation about the event in 2016 saying more than 2,500 recognized partners from all 50 states have collaborated to increase charitable giving compared to the post-Thanksgiving Tuesday in 2015.

#GivingTuesday began in 2012 with New York City’s cultural institution 92nd Street Y. It is characterized by a hashtag which turns a word, or any group of words that follow, into a searchable Twitter link. When the hashtag is clicked, posts concerning the subject are able to be seen on Twitter in real time. Through the power of social media #GivingTuesday has become a global movement of giving and philanthropy.
