Woods in contention at Hero World Challenge after second round 68

Photo by Phil Ellsworth / ESPN Images(NASSAU, Bahamas) — Tiger Woods turned back time in the second round of the Hero World Challenge today, shooting a 4-under-par 68 and briefly holding the tournament lead.

Playing his second round after a ten-month absence, Woods moved into a tie for fifth place. He sits five shots behind clubhouse leader Charley Hoffman.

“I think I’m still in it,” he said after the round. “We’ve got two more days, and I think it’s supposed to blow a little harder tomorrow. If that’s the case, I think a good solid round should get me up there.”

Woods birdied the first hole on Friday, added two more in the next three holes, and finished the front nine with an eagle.

Woods has struggled in recent years, after undergoing four back surgeries. The latest surgery, a fusion, has reportedly eliminated all of his pain.

“No issues at all,” he said Friday. “None.”

The former world number one golfer hasn’t won an event since the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
