Marion County resident Marie Thompson has been named Nurse Practitioner of the Year after being nominated for the honor by her peers. The announcement came during a luncheon celebrating National Nurse Practitioner Week in November.

Baxter Regional Medical Center hosted the event for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) serving the Twin Lakes community. An APRN is a nurse who has obtained at least a Master’s Degree in Nursing, including Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Thompson has been a nurse practitioner at Regional Family Medicine since 1998 and is known as beloved and compassionate by her loyal patients. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in Geriatrics and Family Practice and has served on the Advisory Boards of both the Mruk Family Education Center on Aging and Peitz Cancer Support House of BRMC. She also volunteers at the Mountain Home Christian Clinic.

She and her husband Phil, who retired as director of Hospice of the Ozarks, have lived in the Twin Lakes Area for many years and have two children and two grandchildren.

There are more than 234,000 nurse practitioners licensed to practice in the United States, with an additional 23,000 NP students graduating each year. A spokesperson for BRMC says there are more than 50 nurse practitioners serving in the hospital and community clinics.
