This past fall, the Rotary Club of Mountain Home sent ten local high school juniors to a special camp called “RYLA” (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The students from Mountain Home and Cotter, as well as a home-schooled student, spent four days with hundreds of other young people from a four-state area.

The all-volunteer staff and chaperones teach the campers to develop their leadership skills and to dedicate themselves to a better future. Rotarian, and Baxter County Justice of the Peace for District 3, Rick Steiner; heads up the Mountain Home Rotary efforts and arranges to get the 10 students to camp and back. He also serves as a camp counselor. This year, he took 1 returning CIT (“Chief in Training”), six youth from Mountain Home, and four from Cotter.

Eight of the students joined the Rotary Club recently for lunch and shared their experiences and what it meant to attend. Money for the camp comes from the annual Rotary Pancake Day fundraiser.
