(AP) – Authorities in Hot Springs say a teenager whose body
was discovered in a vacant lot last week died from accidental hypothermia. The body of 18-year-old Darrell Stipes of Mountain Pine was discovered near an intersection in Hot Springs last Wednesday afternoon. The Garland County Sheriff’s Department received a missing person’s report about Stipes on Dec. 5.

Officials say Stipes’ body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory and that an autopsy found that he died due to accidental hypothermia.

Hypothermia occurs when a person’s body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Climate records indicates that Hot Springs has experienced sub-freezing temperatures several times this month, with overnight temperatures in the teens several times.
