Local teams finish tournament play with mixed results

Several area basketball teams were in action on Saturday.

Three area high school boys’ teams played their last games in the Sparta Tournament.
Gainesville ended up with a third place finish. The Bulldogs defeated the host Trojans by a final of 48-40.
Bakersfield fell short of a consolation title. The Lions lost to Fordland by a 65-50 decision.
Forsyth was unsuccessful in its bid for the tournament title. The Panthers fell to Fair Grove 74-53.

Gainesville’s girls were victorious in their game at the CMH High School Basketball Shootout on the campus of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar. The Lady Bulldogs topped Lockwood by a score of 47-41.

The Dora boys left Mountain Grove with a third place finish in the Family Pharmacy Panther Classic. The Falcons beat Clever 73-67.

The Izard County Invitational Basketball Tournament came to an end Saturday at Izard County High School in Brockwell.
The host Cougars took the senior boys’ title with a 61-43 victory over Cave City. Tournament MVP Justus Cooper led Izard County with 31 points, and Caleb Faulkner added 13. The Cougars improve to 26-2 on the season as Cooper was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Faulkner and Dylan Tharp and Calico Rock’s Connor Sanders.
Izard County did not fare as well in the senior girls’ championship game as they lost to Melbourne 69-40. The Lady Cougars were led by Abby Brashear with 17 points, and Laney Rider chipped in 12. Both were selected for the All Tournament team.
Izard County was able to get another victory over Cave City as the junior boys’ game went to a final of 34-30. Noah Everett was the Junior Cougars’ top scorer with ten points as their record goes to 21-1. Noah Everett was joined on the All Tournament team by MVP Coby Everett and Chase Orf of Izard County and Chris Cray of Mammoth Spring.
Melbourne began the day by winning the junior girls’ championship. The Junior Lady Bearkatz defeated Rural Special 44-36.
