The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is providing free tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program. Now through April 17th, assistance is available from an office at First Baptist Church, located at 1205 Spring Street in Mountain Home, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon. Appointments can be made by calling the office at 870-656-6911 between 9:00 and 3:00. Local Tax-Aide director Daryl Benham says it's a single line, and anyone having trouble getting through can keep trying or walk in to make an appointment.
There is no fee and AARP membership is not required.
A list of documents to bring and other locations across the state can be found at www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/ or by calling 1-888-227-7669 for more information.
AARP volunteers for the Foundation Tax-Aide are trained and IRS-certified each year, so they understand the latest changes to the U.S. Tax Code.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is celebrating its 50th year of providing the nation's largest free tax assistance and preparation service. Since it's inception, the program has served more than 50 million tax payers.
The program started in 1968 with four volunteers working at one site. Today nearly 35,000 volunteers serve low-to moderate-income taxpayers at 5,000 locations. There are approximately twenty sites in Arkansas.
