Just five years after the first hospice in the country opened in Connecticut, a group of area residents joined forces in 1979 and Hospice of the Ozarks opened its doors. The non-profit venture would be one of the first of its kind in this part of the country.

Today, Hospice of the Ozarks serves patients in a 50-mile radius of Mountain Home throughout Baxter and Marion counties.

Executive Director Greg Wood says the majority of those receiving services through Hospice of the Ozarks are outside of Hospice House.

Wood says three levels of in-patient care are offered to those at what he describes as one of the organization’s jewels, Hospice House.

The third level of care for some patients unable to remain at home and requiring 24-hour care for a day, weeks or even months leads to them renting a room at Hospice House.

Wood says a common misconception is that Medicare, Medicaid and insurance cover the costs for those receiving hospice care.
