(AP) – A draft policy outlining criteria for the dismissal of tenured University of Arkansas faculty has been approved.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that that the university’s board of trustees unanimously approved the proposal at a Thursday meeting in Monticello.

The approval comes despite requests by faculty to delay action with some professors saying the new policy’s broad language threatens academic tenure.

But board members say the process to dismiss faculty members took longer under the old policy. Some also note that tenured faculty members can appeal dismissals for an unsatisfactory performance.

The proposed policy was recommended for approval by UA System President Donald Bobbitt, who describes the update as part of a larger project to ensure policies “are appropriate for the rapidly-changing landscape” of higher education.
