exceeded its 2012 record of $51.4 million with last month’s revenue total of $53.5 million. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the lottery raised $7.9 million for college scholarships last month. A Powerball jackpot that hit $456 million and a Mega Millions jackpot reaching $521 million boosted the lottery’s revenue for March. The lottery released the figures this week in its monthly report to Gov. Asa Hutchinson and the Legislative Council’s lottery oversight subcommittee.

Director Bishop Woosley said Tuesday that the lottery would’ve raised more for college scholarships last month “had it not been for a couple of larger prizes.”

The state lottery has been selling tickets since 2009. The lottery’s net proceeds help fund the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarships.
