Retired Mountain Home Postmaster Hillrey Adams has become the fourth potential candidate for Mountain Home mayor in the November General Election. Adams made his formal announcement for candidacy on the Veterans Plaza 2000 on the Baxter County Courthouse square Tuesday before a group of about two dozen people.

The former Mountain Home City Council member joins current council members Dave Almond and Nancy Osmon who have both announced their intentions to seek the open mayoral position. City Clerk Brian Plumlee has announced his exploratory committee as he also considers a run. Mayor Joe Dillard has announced he is not seeking re-election.

In selecting the site for his announcement, the 62-year-old Adams said he chose it because it sits on or near where the former Angler’s Restaurant was located where he dined with his family as a boy. While growing up in Jonesboro, the Adams family camped on Lake Norfork dating back to the time when the ferry was operational, creating what he described as a special memory for him.

He first resided in Mountain Home in 1992, when he was detailed from Paragould with the U.S. Postal Service to become acting superintendent of postal operations in Mountain Home. The following February, he was named postmaster in Mountain Home, serving until 2003.

During his time as postmaster, he served one term on the Mountain Home City Council. He also served on the Mountain Home Planning Commission, the Baxter County E911 Board and as a member of the Mountain Home Rotary Club. His community involvement includes the Mountain Home Bomber Booster Club and the American Legion baseball program.

Adams transferred to Jonesboro to serve as the city’s postmaster in 2004, eventually retiring from the postal service with 40 years of service.

Since retirement, he has worked for North Arkansas Glass and as a field representative for U.S. Senator John Boozman. Adams and his wife, Susan, purchased a home in Baxter County in 2016 with plans to retire here in the future.

Adams said he is looking forward to giving back to a community that has given him so much and what he described as a very special place for him and his family.

He and his wife, Susan, have two sons who attended school in Mountain Home, Brandon Clairday and Stetson Adams.
