ABC RadioThis week, Brantley Gilbert‘s been in Music City rehearsing for his May 4 date at Ascend Amphitheater with the Nashville Symphony.
But on Wednesday, “The Ones That Like Me” hitmaker took a break to announce he’ll be selling “I Believe in Heroism” t-shirts at the show, to benefit the victims of Sunday’s Waffle House shooting. The red, white and blue design is a variation of the “I Love Nashville” design, and features an image of James Shaw Jr.‘s injured hand.
Shaw managed to disarm the gunman, who’d already killed four people at the Nashville restaurant. Still, at Brantley’s news conference, the 29-year-old Shaw remained reluctant to be labeled a hero.
“When you think of a hero, you think of Batman or Superman or something like that, or Wonder Woman or somebody like that, and they’re fictional characters,” Shaw explained. “But if I say that a regular guy took a gun from somebody, I hope you can find that same fire within yourself, that you can possibly emulate that, and that anybody can be a hero.”
Brantley respectfully begs to disagree.
“I know he says he’s not a hero, but I kinda told him, ‘Hey man. You did what you did. You got hero in you for sure,'” he said. “…In [an] extraordinary case like this… that’s all heart and soul. That’s probably a little bit of instinct and a lot of heart.”
