Cynthia Sakian of Cotter, charged with first-degree assault following the death of a patient in a nursing home where she worked after she gave the wrong medication to the woman, has been sentenced to 12 months probation and ordered to surrender her nursing license.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Sakian admitted to investigators — due to a multiple set of distractions — she mistakenly gave the patient morphine and Percocet, instead of the correct medications prescribed for the woman in mid-January last year.

The State Medical Examiner’s office reported the patient died as the result of complications of narcotic intoxication and ruled the death accidental.

The charge against Sakian is a Class A misdemeanor.

A review of the 58-year-old Sakian’s records listed a number of similar events where errors were made in administrating medications. According to court records, the errors happened in October and December 2015, as well as in January, May and June 2016. The records do not indicate if Sakian worked at the Gassville facility when the earlier errors occurred.

Sakian was represented by Little Rock attorney Darren O’Quinn.

The documents containing the plea and sentence were filed April 24th.
