Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program sign-up starts Thursday


The annual sign-up for low-income seniors to receive a $50 coupon book to purchase locally grown fresh produce a local farmer’s markets will be starting soon in Baxter, Boone, Marion, Newton and Searcy counties. Jamie Cooley, Regional Manager from the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Arkansas, says the program is through a grant from the USDA Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program.

To be eligible to receive a $50 coupon book, seniors must meet monthly household income guidelines of $1,872 for a family of one, $2,538 for a family of two, $3,204 for a family of three or $3,870 for a family of four.

One coupon book is available to senior adults, age 60 or older, per household. At the time of sign-up, seniors must provide proof of all income and photo identification. Coupon books will be distributed on a first-come first served basis at the time of sign-up. When supplies are depleted, a waiting list will be started.

Sign-up time and locations are as follows: In Marion County on Thursday morning from 9:00 until noon at the Marion County Senior Activity and Wellness Center in Flippin; in Baxter County on Thursday, May 10th from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Van Matre Senior Activity and Wellness Center in Mountain Home; in Boone County on Friday, May 11th from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Boone County Senior Activity and Wellness Center in Harrison; and on Friday, May 11th from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Searcy County Senior Activity and Wellness Center in Marshall.

The Food Bank of North Central Arkansas will be on hand to offer information on programs they provide, as well as to provide assistance for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Care coordinators from the Area Agency on Aging will also assist seniors in applying for the Medicare Savings Programs, Medicaid and extra help with prescription drug costs.
