A Marion County man, 48-year-old Craig Allen Smith of Flippin, was in Marion County Circuit Court Wednesday on a felony charge of possession of firearms by certain persons following his arrest in early April by Arkansas State Police. As a convicted felon, Smith is prohibited from possessing or being in direct contact with firearms.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the vehicle Smith was driving was stopped on State Highway 62 outside Yellville, after it was observed without a rearview mirror.

Smith was asked if he had anything on his person the trooper should be aware of. He indicated he had a knife on his hip. After he emptied the contents of his pockets onto the hood of the patrol car, the trooper noticed three bullets in Smith’s front left pocket.

The trooper then asked Smith if there was anything in his vehicle he should know about. In response, the Flippin man said there might be a gun in the vehicle. With Smith granting a consent to search request, the trooper located a revolver inside a brown leather holster concealed in a welding sleeve under the driver’s seat. The revolver was loaded with five bullets.

Online records indicate Smith was charged with the same felony firearms offense in 2015, along with leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury or death and a misdemeanor count of public intoxication. He was sentenced in 2016 to 12 months probation on the leaving the scene of an accident charge and 36 months probation for the weapons charge.

In circuit court Wednesday, Judge Gordon Webb set Smith’s bond at $2,500 for both the recent charge and the revocation of the 2016 sentence and probation.

He is set for an arraignment appearance in circuit court later this month.
