HACKETT, Ark. (AP)   Authorities say three deputies were hurt and a suspect was killed following a standoff in rural western Arkansas.

Authorities say the situation began late Monday when an off-duty police officer in Hackett checked on a neighbor after hearing a disturbance. According to Fort Smith television station KFSM, the home’s resident opened fire on the Hackett officer, who then called 911.

The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office says the man continued firing shots at additional officers who later arrived. Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck says the officers returned fire.

Hollenbeck says the suspect is dead and the wounded deputies, who are part of the county’s SWAT team, are expected to recover.

The standoff occurred in Hackett, about 125 miles northwest of Little Rock.
