A Lawrence County man, 70-year-old Jerry Don Mitts of Ravenden, was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center Tuesday for allegedly failing to make payments on a vehicle he purchased from a Gassville auto dealer.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Mitts entered into an agreement with a Gassville business in March 2017 for the purchase of a sport utility vehicle for $3,999. The cost was to be covered in 18 payments, with the first due in April 2017. However, no payments were made.

A Gassville Police officer made contact with Mitts in April 2017 in an attempt to resolve the debt issue. Mitts gave the officer “his word as a man” he would park the vehicle at the Ravenden gas station the following morning. The Gassville auto dealer sent a representative to Ravenden to retrieve the vehicle, but Mitts did not leave it at the gas station.

The Gassville officer noted Mitts stated he wasn’t going to pay the auto dealer and is under the assumption this is a civil matter and nothing can be done to him.

Mitts is charged with a felony count of defrauding secured creditors. His bond is set at $4,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday.
