An Izard County man, 35-year-old John Wayne Morgan of Calico Rock, has been arrested and charged in connection with a burglary and theft at the Calico Rock Museum.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the museum executive director found the back door shut but the doorknob on the floor of the Main Street establishment last week. Video surveillance indicated someone had kicked in the back door on the morning of April 28th.

The executive director reported a stack of envelopes containing vendor and Mexican dinner tickets missing, along with a check for $15 and a can of bottled soda. The vendor tickets have no value until items in the museum are sold.

The Izard County Sheriff’s deputy reviewed still photos from the surveillance system, allowing him to recognize Morgan as the suspect in the burglary. Morgan had been to the Izard County Sheriff’s Office two days prior to the burglary to register as a sex offender from Minnesota. He has multiple felony convictions from Missouri, Minnesota and Arkansas, with five of them from Izard County Circuit Court.

Morgan is charged with a felony count of commercial burglary, as well as a misdemeanor count of theft of property. He is also charged with a habitual offender enhancement.

Morgan’s bond is set at $25,000, and he is set to appear in Izard County Circuit Court later this month.
