A group from Washington D.C. has paid for TV commercials in Arkansas against the opponent of a Mountain Home attorney in the Arkansas Court of Appeals District 2 race in the May primary election. The Republican State Leadership committee is paying for ads attacking Judge Bart Virden who is being opposed in his bid for reelection by Johnnie Copeland of Mountain Home. District two consists of 18 counties in North Central Arkansas.

Copeland told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette her campaign has portrayed a positive message, and she was surprised when she saw the negative ad against Judge Virden.

The RSLC commercial is negative against Judge Virden for an opinion he wrote last fall overturning the conviction of a North Little Rock man who had been sentenced for 40 years in prison for the rape of three girls. The ad claims “violent criminals pray for judges like Bart Virden.” The commercial ends with a positive message about Copeland.

The Democrat-Gazette quotes a spokesman for the leadership committee who says Copeland is an experienced prosecutor who “represents Arkansas values” better than Virden.

An Arkansas Times article about the ad notes the same group bought commercial time in 2016 to campaign against Clark Mason in his race for the state Supreme Court against Shawn Womack of Mountain Home. Womack won that race.
